The INTERACT-Africa PhD and MSc Scholarship for 2024-2025 offers an exciting chance for students keen on advancing their education in areas crucial for environmental sustainability. Sponsored by the European Union (EU), INTERACT-Africa is an academic mobility project within Africa aimed at promoting collaboration and mobility among universities on the continent

The INTERACT-Africa project focuses on disciplines such as Chemistry, Biology, and Information Technology. It highlights innovative methods for transforming organic waste into valuable bioproducts, essential for fostering environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive economies. This scholarship aims to empower students with the expertise and abilities required to address climate change and promote a sustainable bioeconomy.

Accepted applicants will participate in cutting-edge research and hands-on applications that bolster the shift towards green technologies. This aligns with the overarching objectives of lessening the impacts of climate change and advancing sustainable development across Africa. The EU aims to strengthen the capabilities of African higher education institutions and nurture a new cohort of scientists and technologists committed to sustainable development through this scholarship.

INTERACT-Africa aims to:

1. Enhance capacity building in higher education institutions (HEIs) by providing inclusive learning mobility opportunities. This focuses on training in green Chemistry, Biology, and Information Technology to cultivate a skilled workforce capable of implementing sustainable practices.

2. Foster entrepreneurship and support the growth of green technology companies in Africa by providing aspiring business owners and start-ups in green biology, chemistry, and information technology access to capital, technical assistance, and mentorship.

3. Promote networking and knowledge exchange among companies to stimulate innovation and long-term economic growth. This includes offering internships, cooperative education programs, and practical experience opportunities.

Eligibility Criteria:

Candidates must meet the minimum requirements outlined by the host university’s senate or other regulatory body to be considered for admission to master’s and doctoral programs.

Verify the candidate’s nationality and residency in one of the eligible nations.

Recipients of student loans must be African citizens residing in Africa during the application period.

Submit a one-page research concept paper in the intended field of study, formatted in Times New Roman with single spacing.

Applicants must provide an admission letter from the host university to participate in the mobility program.

Declare not having previously received a student scholarship under projects selected within the framework of the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme 2022-2027.

Agree not to utilize funds from another EU-funded scholarship program for the same activity during intra-African mobility.

Include a motivation letter highlighting cutting-edge climate change and mitigation technologies.

Submit two reference letters, one from a professor, lecturer, or academic advisor.

Be willing to study in one of the eligible countries rather than in their home country.

Provide evidence of any special needs.

Applicants from non-English-speaking backgrounds must meet the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) or its equivalent for institutions where English is the medium of instruction.

A French proficiency level of B2 or higher is required to study at the Institut Facultaire Des Sciences Agronomiques De Yangambi (IFA-YANGAMBI).

Target beneficiaries:

The scholarship beneficiaries fall into two target groups (TGs):

1. TG-I: This group comprises students currently enrolled, admitted, or holding a higher education degree from one of the African universities participating in the INTERACT-Africa project partnership. These universities include:

– Moi University (Kenya)

– Mbarara University of Science and Technology (Uganda)

– Sokoine University of Agriculture (Tanzania)

– Addis Ababa University (Ethiopia)

– Institut Facultaire Des Sciences Agronomiques De Yangambi (Democratic Republic of Congo)

2. TG-II: This group consists of students registered, admitted, or holding a higher education degree from an African university not part of the partnership. Priority is given to students from conflict-affected and disadvantaged countries, such as Côte d’Ivoire, Sudan, Somalia, Mozambique, and Algeria.

Benefits of INTERACT-Africa PhD And MSc Scholarship:

The funding package covers tuition and study-related expenses throughout the project, along with comprehensive health and accident insurance. PhD students receive a monthly stipend of 1,230 Euros, which includes travel costs to and from the host institution, visa expenses, and a settling allowance. MSc students receive a monthly stipend of 890 Euros, covering travel costs to and from the host institution, visa fees, and a settling allowance.

Scholarship Duration:

– PhD students can receive the scholarship for up to 36 months.

– MSc students can receive the scholarship for up to 24 months.

The scholarships will be awarded to regional students based on merit. Female, disadvantaged, marginalized groups, and candidates with special needs are strongly encouraged to apply.
