Applications for the Fossil Fuel Grants are now being accepted.

Most news media and newsrooms primarily function at a national level. However, the climate crisis and power dynamics that impede the shift away from fossil fuels significantly extend beyond national borders.
The Fossil Fuel Grant Program 2024 targets cross-border teams of professional journalists and/or newsrooms to explore and report on undisclosed actions by European fossil fuel companies and their affiliates within and outside the continent.

In addition to examining fossil fuel industry actions crossing borders, this program can fund investigations comparing local industry activities or policies across two or more regions.

The resulting stories must be published in at least two outlets in two different countries, with at least one being a European media source.
The grants can also provide support for initial work in developing new investigative projects.

This support can include covering expenses like working hours, logistics, travel, legal support, translations, technology access, and data sets.

In addition to financial support, teams can also request an experienced mentor to help with the investigation’s focus or a particular skill or expertise.

This grant is backed by the Meliore Foundation and falls under a broader program:

The Earth Investigations Program, supported by Arcadia.
Cross-border teams consisting of at least two professional journalists or news outlets can propose a journalistic investigation focused on issues involving European fossil fuel companies and their affiliates both within and outside the continent.

The total funding available for all supported investigations will be €50,000. The program receives support from Meliore.

Application Rounds for the 2024 Fossil Fuel Grants Program:

For the 2024 Fossil Fuel Grants Program, there are 20 application rounds scheduled over a six-year period starting from January 2022.
The final two deadlines in 2024 are:

Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 1 pm CET (Brussels time)

Eligibility Requirements for the 2024 Fossil Fuel Grants Program:

To qualify for the 2024 Fossil Fuel Grants Program, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Cross-border teams consisting of at least two journalists or news outlets can propose a journalistic investigation focusing on environmental issues.
Only applicants legally residing in at least two different countries are eligible for funding.
Applicants must be professional journalists or news outlets. Personal references and/or references to previous work are essential in this regard.
News outlets must be legally established entities, officially incorporated at least one year before the application deadline of the grant call. The investigative proposal must focus on cross-border environmental journalism concerning European affairs, either within or outside Europe. This implies that the investigation must be relevant to Europe.

In addition to investigations into environmental issues crossing borders, this grant can also support comparative investigations and policies between two or more countries, regions, cities, etc. The investigation’s findings must be published by at least two professional news outlets in at least two different countries, with one being in Europe.

Content published by at least two professional news outlets is required.

Investigative journalism published by professional media in any format, including print, online, broadcast, or cross-media, is eligible.

Your investigation can be published as newspaper and magazine articles, radio and television documentaries and series, photo-reportages and books, podcasts, and journalistic non-fiction books.
