Major Nigerian banks such as UBA, Zenith Bank, GTBank, Access Bank, and others have declared a 24-hour closure of their branches nationwide. This temporary shutdown, scheduled for Wednesday, June 12, 2024, aligns with the public holiday declared by the federal government to celebrate Democracy Day.

The decision comes in response to an official statement by Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, on behalf of the Federal Government. The Minister emphasized the importance of reflecting on the contributions of Nigeria’s founding fathers to ensure the nation remains “a united, secured, peaceful, and indivisible entity.” This year’s observance invites citizens to contemplate the strides made toward democracy and national cohesion.
Recognizing the potential inconvenience this might cause to customers planning to conduct banking transactions, institutions have proactively communicated alternatives. Customers are encouraged to leverage electronic banking channels such as online banking, mobile banking, USSD, and ATMs, ensuring uninterrupted access to financial services during the holiday.
For instance, Stanbic IBTC reassured its customers, stating, “Please be informed that our branches will be closed on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in observance of the Democracy Daybreak. However, our digital channels are available for all your banking needs. Happy Democracy Day celebration.”

Similarly, Wema Bank notified its customers: “Please note, in observance of Democracy Day, our branches will be closed on Wednesday, June 12th. We will be back to serve you on Thursday, June 13th, 2024. Our alternative banking channels are still here for your convenience. Happy Holidays!”
