Harvard University Academy Scholars Program 2025/2026

Applications are now open for the 2025-2026 Harvard University Academy Scholars Program.

This program, offered by the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, aims to identify and support exceptional scholars early in their academic careers.

Applicants should demonstrate excellence in a social science discipline and possess expertise in countries or regions outside the United States or Canada.

The research should bridge disciplinary boundaries and explore comparative, transnational, or domestic issues.

Academy Scholars are chosen for their resourcefulness, initiative, and originality, qualities essential for future careers in research universities or international institutions.

Eligibility:

These awards are open to recipients of PhD or comparable doctoral degrees (within two years of the August 1, 2025, start date) and advanced doctoral candidates in the social sciences.

Doctoral candidates nearing the completion of their dissertation must submit proof of degree conferral by June 30, 2025, to commence on August 1, 2025.

Program Details:

Fellows at The Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies are appointed to a two-year, in-residence postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA, USA. Recipients receive substantial financial support and research assistance to pursue significant research projects and skill development.

Scholars participate in dinners, seminars, and informal gatherings to encourage interdisciplinary approaches to their work. They receive mentorship from Harvard Academy Senior Scholars, who also serve as the selection committee and support Scholars in achieving their academic potential.

Terms:

Each year, five or six Academy Scholars are selected for two-year appointments with an annual stipend of $80,000. The fellowship must be completed within a three-year window, starting in the fall immediately following the offer.

All application materials must be submitted by September 20, 2024. Late applications will not be accepted. The completed application must include:

Curriculum vitae (CV), including a list of publications
Research proposal (maximum 2000 words), detailing intellectual objectives and planned methodological and disciplinary work
One scholarly writing sample (e.g., a PhD dissertation chapter or a single-authored peer-reviewed academic journal article; maximum fifty pages; in English)
Copy of your PhD program transcript
Three letters of recommendation (uploaded directly and confidentially by the recommender to the online application by September 20, 2024)
