Is Facebook Now Called Meta? – Facebook Inc. Is changing its name to distinguish its myriad parts from solely the social network.
Mark Zuckerberg announced the new name in his keyword for the company during the company’s Connect event. “From now on we are going to be Metaverse-first, not Facebook first he said.”
The Change appears very similar to Google the leading search engine company and tech giant, which was bundled inside Alphabet in 2015 – A bigger company to contain all other parts.
The timing is perhaps even odder following the Facebook papers; internal documents detailing the social network’s major failings and issues that were regarded as misinformation, hate speech, and censorship are now public knowledge. This gave rise to the major question; “Is this a distraction?” or Facebook willfully forcing its transformation at a time when most people are more interested in how it will fix its current state.
The name Meta was chosen to represent the key product that Zuckerberg hopes Facebook now called Meta would be represented by; metaverse. The metaverse is a shared online 3D virtual space that several companies are interested in creating as a form of a future version of the internet.
“In this feature, you will be able to teleport instantly as a hologram to be at the office without a commute, at a concert with friends, or in your parent’s living room to catch up,” Zuckerberg said in his founder’s letter.
Zuckerberg hopes that in the nearest future, metaverse will reach a billion people, host hundreds of billions of dollars of digital commerce, and support jobs for millions of creators and developers.
A few years ago the company has ramped up its effort in hardware, introducing a line of video-calling devices, launching the Ray-Ban stories glasses, and rolling out various versions of the Oculus VR headsets. The company has announced that AR and VR will be a key part of its strategy in the coming years.
The demo was like a Pixar-like animation of the company hopes to build someday. The includes characters interacting using AR and VR. The users included were hanging out in space as cartoon-like versions of themselves or fantastical characters, like a robot that represents their virtual selves.
Zuckerberg said a lot of this is a long way off, with components not the metaverse potentially becoming mainstream in 5 – 10 years. The company expects to invest many billions of dollars for years before the metaverse reaches scale.
Meta also announced the code name for its first fully AR-capable smart glasses: project Nazare, The glasses are “still a few years out “, The company said in a blog post “We still have a way to go with Nazare, but we are making progress.”
How Comes about the name, Meta
The Facebook CEO, Mark Zuckerberg mentioned in his meta founders note that he use to study classics and the word meta comes from the Greek word meaning “beyond”. In his view, it symbolizes that there is more to build, and there is always a next chapter to the story.
