The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) offers grants for foreign nationals residing outside Italy and Italian citizens living abroad (IRE)* for the academic year 2023-2024. These grants are intended to foster international cultural, scientific, and technological collaboration, promote Italian language and culture, and strengthen Italy’s global economic presence (in accordance with Law 288/55 and subsequent amendments).

The grants support study, training, and/or research programs at Italian Higher Education Institutions, both public and legally recognized.

Master’s degree (Laurea Magistrale 2nd cycle), Arts, Music, and Dance courses at Higher Education Institutions (AFAM), PhD programs, Research projects under academic supervision (Co-tutela Projects), and Italian Language and Culture Courses.

Tuition Fees:
Depending on each university’s policy, recipients may be exempt from paying enrollment and tuition fees. However, this exemption does not apply to Italian language and culture courses, which may require enrollment fees.

Health and Medical Insurance:
Recipients will receive coverage under a health and medical/accident insurance plan arranged by MAECI for the entire duration of the grant. However, insurance benefits will not cover incidents arising from pre-existing physical or pathological conditions.
Financial Grant:
The grant amount is 9,000 euros, distributed in three installments to the recipient’s personal checking account held in their name with an Italian banking institution. For Italian language and culture courses, the grant is a one-time payment of 3,000 euros.
The scholarship duration can range from 3 to 9 months, depending on the type of course. Renewals are granted only to applicants who demonstrate satisfactory academic progress.

Applications are open to foreign students not residing in Italy and Italian citizens living abroad (IRE)* who possess the necessary academic qualifications required to enroll in an Italian University/Institute. More information can be found at this link.
Age Limits:
For Master’s Degree/Higher Education in Arts, Music, and Dance (AFAM) Programs/Italian Language and Culture advanced Courses, applicants must be of legal age and not exceed 28 years by the call deadline (born after June 14, 1995), with exceptions for renewals.
For PhD Programs, applicants must be of legal age and not exceed 30 years by the call deadline (born after June 14, 1993), with exceptions for renewals.
For Research Projects under academic supervision, applicants must be of legal age and not exceed 40 years by the call deadline (born after June 14, 1983).
To enroll in a course taught in Italian, applicants need to provide proof of their Italian language proficiency.
The minimum requirement is a B2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Those who were previously enrolled in an Italian-taught course at the University can submit a language certification from a University department instructor.
For courses taught in English, applicants must show proficiency in the English language by providing a language certificate. Again, the minimum requirement is a B2 level according to the CEFR. Candidates from countries where English is an official language may provide a self-certification. If applying for courses conducted entirely in English, no proof of proficiency in Italian is necessary.

Applicants for Italian language and culture courses must demonstrate proficiency at a minimum A2 level according to the CEFR.
For PhD programs and research projects supervised by academics, no proof of language proficiency is needed.
To apply, candidates must fill out and submit the online application form, which is available on the official website upon registration. Applications must be submitted by 2 pm (Central European Time) on June 14, 2024.
