Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has reinstated Alhaji Aliyu Abdulkadir Gaya as the Emir of Gaya in a pivotal decision that realigns the region’s traditional leadership. Alongside this restoration, the governor has also appointed two additional emirs, expanding the local governance framework.

Alhaji Aliyu Abdulkadir Gaya returns to his previous dignitary role after a period of dethronement, marking a significant turn in the state’s traditional affairs. Complementing this reinstatement, Governor Yusuf appointed Alhaji Muhammad Karaye and Alhaji Muhammad Umar as the new Emirs of Karaye and Rano, respectively. These roles are designated as second-class emir, with Kano maintaining its status as a first-class emirate.

Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the spokesperson for the governor, emphasized that the new appointments aim to foster a deeper sense of cultural preservation, peace, and unity among the people. He noted that Karaye previously served as the District Head of Rogo, and Umar was the district head of Bunkure, demonstrating their longstanding commitment to regional leadership.
Governor Yusuf’s office confirmed that the appointments are effective immediately, underscoring the urgency of establishing stable governance in the newly recognized emirates. This decision comes in conjunction with legislative moves by the Kano State House of Assembly, which recently passed the Kano State Emirates Council Establishment Bill 2024. This bill reinforces the hierarchical structure of the emirates, mandating that all significant appointments and activities receive gubernatorial approval.
