The Bola Tinubu government has postponed the inauguration and retreat for Pro-chancellors, Chairmen, and members of Governing Councils of federal tertiary institutions.
Initially scheduled by the Federal Ministry of Education for Thursday, May 30, and Friday, May 31, 2024, respectively, these events have been immediately delayed, as stated in a release signed by Folasade Boriowo, the Director of Press for the ministry.

The postponement aims to facilitate a thorough review of the list, as directed by the Presidency. Boriowo assured that updates will be provided to all stakeholders in due time, citing a presidential directive conveyed through a State House press release dated May 23, 2024, regarding the need for a comprehensive review of the membership of governing councils of federal tertiary institutions in Nigeria.

Last week, President Bola Tinubu instructed a thorough review of the recently announced governing boards for Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
He stated that the nominations did not adequately represent the federal character of the country, citing disparities such as some states receiving only one nomination while others had multiple appointees.
The decision to review came after considerable public criticism, including protests from the Academic Staff Union of Universities and the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics.
